Reconsidering a Classic: Madama Butterfly for the 21st Century
Description
Presented by Virginia Opera and The Norfolk Public Library at The Slover.
Puccini's Madama Butterfly is one of the most produced and beloved in the operatic repertoire ever since its premiere in 1904. It tells the heartbreaking story of Cio-Cio-San and her ill-fated love affair with a callow young Navy Lieutenant Pinkerton and how two cultures can cross paths and yet not find a way to bridge their different perspectives on life and love. While its popularity has endured for more than a century, its narrative presents challenges in the present day due to its depiction of Japanese culture along with questions focused on cultural and sexual imperialism.
So in the 21st century, how do we continue to tell the story of tragic love through Puccini's beautiful and evocative music and yet find a new way to depict those relationships and cultures?
Join us for an engaging panel discussion with the Virginia Opera production's creative team and Artistic Director and Chief Conductor, Adam Turner, focused on the creative process and how one can approach complicated works with a fresh perspective and more accurate representation. We hope this conversation can generate interesting insights for both the experienced operagoer and for newcomers to opera alike.
This event will take place at Slover Library - 235 E Plume Street, Norfolk, VA 23510
